Difficulty level: Intermediate, it's recommended that you have some familiarity with tying a basic square knot. This tutorial contains instructions on how to make a square knot. It's is recommended that you practice making square knots before you start making the actual fishbone hemp jewelry.

Step 1 for creating fishbone hemp jewelry is measuring our hemp. We will need four strands.

Now the knots are the same for necklaces, chokers, bracelets and anklets. The only difference between a necklace and a bracelet is the length of the cord that you will use. Obviously you will use longer cords for a necklace than you would for a bracelet, choker or anklet.

For a fishbone hemp necklace or choker you will need 3 strands about 128 inches in length and 1 strand that is 32 inches in length.

For a fishbone hemp bracelet or anklet you will need 3 strands about 64 inches in length and 1 strand that is 32 inches in length.

When in doubt or the first time you try a new style of hemp jewelry it is better to use more hemp. It's easier to cut off the extra hemp than waste your time or a piece of hemp jewelry because you didn't have enough hemp to finish it properly.

Now the fishbone macrame jewelry design is basically made using a standard macrame square knot like what is used to make a flat macrame hemp jewelry design. Their is just one slight variation. A standard flat macrame hemp jewelry design uses 1 set of knotting cords a fishbone macrame hemp jewelry design uses more than 1 set of knotting cords. In this tutorial we will be using 3 sets of knotting cord to make our bracelets and necklaces.

The basic knot that we will be using to make our fishbone macrame hemp jewelry is a basic square knot.

How to make a square knot instructions.

Step 1 Grab the cord on your right and bring it over and across the center string. Then under the cord on your left.

Step 2 Take the left cord and bring it under the center string and threw the loop on the right.

Step 3. Pull the knot tight. You need good tension on all three cords.

Do the same in reverse.

Step 4. Grab the cord on the left and bring it over and across the center string. Then under the cord on your left.

Step 5. take the right cord now and bring it under the center string and threw the loop on the right.

Step 6. Pull the knot tight.

If this is your first time tying a square knot you may want to practice making a simple necklace or bracelet to get the hang of tying square knots before you start making fishbone hemp jewelry. It's more confusing to learn to tie a square knot when you have a bunch of extra cords and complications.

So now to start making your fishbone jewelry.

#1. Take the hemp cords that you made earlier. Their size will depend upon what kind of hemp jewelry you are making whether it is necklaces, chokers, bracelet or anklets.

#2. Take the 3 longer cords fold them in half. Create a loop. You will secure the loop by tying all the cords together using an overhand knot. Make sure to include the fourth and final string in this knot.

You should have 7 cords hanging loosely below your knot.

#3. Take two of the knotting cords and tie a square knot. Tie the square knot so that it wraps around all the other cords. Leave these cords hanging out to the side. This is your first set of knotting cords.

#4. Pick another two knotting cords and tie a square knot. Tie it around the remaining cords. Exclude your first set of knotting cords keep them off to the side. When you have finished this knot leave these cords out to the side as well. This will be your second set of knotting cords.

#5. Take the third set of cords and tie a square knot. Only the center string should be left in the center now. These knotting cords will be your third set of knotting cords.

#6. Take your first set of knotting cords and bring it down below the knots that you just made with your third set of knotting cords. Tie a square knot with the first set of knotting cords. Leave the cords a little loose so that they form a circle.

#7. Keep repeating step #6 with the first, second and then third set of knotting cords. Creating a series of circles that resembles the rib cage of a fish. Hence the name fishbone macrame design.

#8. When you get to the desired length tie it all off with an overhand knot to prevent your macrame knots from coming undone.

#9. The strings that are remaining can be used to tie the necklace, bracelet, choker or anklet that you made shut threw the loop that you made in the beginning.
